built upon the material in the original course.The SSSTS has come to be the most widely recognised qualification (including by HSE) to demonstrate the required level of competence for the supervision of health and safety on site. The course also acts as a useful introduction and preparation for the 5 day SMSTS course.
This course is a requirement for all sub-contractor supervisors working on UKCG sites by the end of 2009 (UKCG members include Balfour Beatty, Bam, Bovis Lend Lease, Carillion, Clugstons, Costain, Galliford, John Sisk & Son, Keepmoat, Kier, Mace, Midas Group, Morgan Sindall, Seddon, Shepherds, Simon Construction, Sir Robert McAlpine, Skanska, Miller, Thomas Vale, Vinci, Wates, and Wimott Dixon).

This course is designed for site managers, agents, contracts managers, quantity surveyors, and any other persons who are responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and supervising construction work activities.

Download full details as a pdfThe course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the construction, civil engineering and allied trades. The course focuses on the need for adequate risk assessment and implementation of sensible, practical control measures which are proportionate to the level of risk, and on the importance of effective management to promote behavioural safety and development of a health and safety culture.
Introduced in 1979, the SMSTS has come to be the most widely recognised qualification (including by HSE) to demonstrate the required level of competence for the management of health and safety on site.
The course runs over 5 days, either consecutively, or more usually one day per week over 5 weeks.

2 Day SMSTS Refresher
- 5th & 12th Jul 2012 – Manchester
Grants: Available for levy paying companies
SMSTS certificate holders will need to renew their qualification in order for it to remain valid. Construction Skills Site Safety Plus recommend that it is renewed every 3 years, but the qualification becomes null and void after 5 years, unless the holder has completed this 2 day refresher course.

Download full details as a pdfOnce the 5 year deadline has passed then the original qualification has expired and the holder must attend the full 5 day course again in order to requalify. Delegates must therefore provide proof of having passed the SMSTS within the last 5 years.
The course will update and extend their health and safety knowledge, as well as a thorough overview of all significant changes in health and safety legislation over the last five years, and their impact on site.

Aims and Objectives:
The two-day refresher course aims to:
! Improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues; and
! Identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation, and new working practices.At the end of the period of training, Delegates will be:
! Aware of, and able to implement, all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a manager;
! Aware of and able to implement new guidance and industry of best practice;
! The ABC course provides training on the benefits of adopting behavioural change for all Contractors and operatives who visit a site. The primary aim of the course is for Contractors to undertake their designated tasks in a safe and proactive manner. This is defined as the “determination and belief that no-one should be injured or suffer ill-health in the course of work activities”.
