The course is designed to help directors and other senior executives in all sectors lead the
health and safety agenda in their organisation. The course reflects the principles embodied
in the Institute of Directors/Health and Safety Commission’s ‘Leading health and safety at
work’ (INDG417).
Course Aims and Objectives:
This course aims to provide directors and owners of small and medium sized enterprises
with an understanding of the moral, legal and business case for proactive health and safety
management and to give guidance on effective risk management.
On successful completion of the course delegates should be able to:
! Understand the importance of strategic health and safety management and its integration into other business management systems.
! Understand the health and safety role and responsibilities of directors and other senior executives.
! Appreciate the consequences of failing to manage health and safety effectively.
! Plan the direction for health and safety through developing and implementing policy.
! Appreciate the importance of an adequately resourced health and safety management system.
! Appreciate the significance of performance monitoring and review for continual improvement of health and safety management.
The course is over 1 day and is split into 5 Modules:
! Module 1 – Why Direct Safely
! Module 2 – Planning Health and Safety
! Module 3 – Delivering Health and Safety
! Module 4 – Monitoring Health and Safety
! Module 5 – Reviewing Health and Safety
Certification
The course is accredited by IOSH, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, Europe’s leading professional body for health and safety practitioners.
At the end of the course, the participants’ understanding of the course material will be evaluated by means of a 15 minute written assessment paper consisting of 10 multi-choice questions and a project designed to test the delegates knowledge of acceptable records/documentary evidence required to support an organization’s defence in litigation.
On successful completion of the course, delegates will be awarded an IOSH Directing Safely for small and medium sized enterprises.
